The morning air loses its warmth, the mist sits heavy over the water, and stepping out onto the pool deck requires a different level of mental toughness. It is a season stripped of summer’s easy warmth. It is raw, it is challenging, and it demands pure grit.
When we sat down to design the new autumn drop for Tide and Tribe Swim, we wanted to capture that exact feeling. We wanted apparel that didn’t just keep you warm after a freezing session, but clothes that mirrored the very discipline it takes to dive in.
That is how Splinter & Stroke was born.
The Inspiration: Artistry Meets the Grind
The concept for this collection came from an unlikely place: marquetry.
If you aren't familiar with it, marquetry is the ancient, highly skilled craft of wood inlay. Artisans take raw, rough timber, cut it into precise geometric shapes, and fit them tightly together to create beautiful, complex patterns.
As we watched the sharp angles of pool lanes and the structured chaos of a swim team training in the dark, the connection clicked.
- The Cut: Every stroke you take in cold water is like a sharp cut into a raw piece of wood. It takes effort, precision, and force.
- The Pattern: The consistency of your training—day after day, lap after lap—is what builds the final picture. Your scars, your tired muscles, and your milestones are pieces of a larger puzzle.
- The Material: Like premium walnut or oak, a dedicated swimmer is built from a raw grain. Unpolished, tough, and resilient.
We took those sharp, interlocking geometric lines of woodcraft and infused them into the graphics of our new heavyweight hoodies and raw-cut tees.
No Polish. Just Grit.
Splinter & Stroke isn't about looking sleek or effortless. It’s a celebration of the rough edges.
The aesthetic is industrial and distressed. The typography is sharp, mimicking the cuts of a chisel. We chose a heavy, structured knit for the hoodies because autumn layering shouldn't just be about comfort—it should feel like armour against the morning chill.
